The Game in the Rain

Chapter 19 - The Game in the Rain
Two years later, Owen and Luke played in the same championship baseball game.
It rained from the third inning onward.
Claire sat under an umbrella near first base.
Adrian stood farther down the bleachers.
He had completed debt restructuring.
He worked for another firm now.
Smaller title.
Smaller salary.
Cleaner life.
Evelyn arrived during the fifth inning.
She stopped when she saw Claire.
For a moment, the old tension returned.
Then Evelyn held up two hot chocolates.
"May I?"
Claire considered it.
Then nodded toward the empty seat.
Evelyn sat.
They did not discuss court.
Or money.
Or Richard.
They watched the boys.
In the final inning, Owen hit a double.
Luke scored.
Adrian jumped so quickly he spilled coffee down his coat.
The boys laughed from the field.
Claire laughed too.
Evelyn began crying.
"Richard would have loved this."
Claire looked at her.
"Yes."
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
"I thought keeping the family together meant keeping everyone close."
Claire said nothing.
"I was wrong."
It was not enough to erase the past.
But it was true.
After the game, Owen ran toward Claire.
Luke ran toward Adrian.
Then halfway across the grass, they switched directions, laughing as both parents opened their arms.
No one stopped them.
No one counted whose turn it was.
No one calculated what either child was worth.
That was the moment Claire finally understood what they had been fighting for.
Not custody.
Not property.
May you like
Not victory.
The right of two boys to love their family without being used by it.
