What Richard Bennett Knew

Chapter 02 - What Richard Bennett Knew

The judge did not tear the envelope open dramatically.

Real courtrooms were quieter than television.

He asked where it came from.

Claire's attorney explained that Richard Bennett, Adrian's father, had died fourteen months earlier. A safe-deposit box in his name had recently been released after a probate dispute was resolved.

Inside had been family photographs, old property deeds, and one sealed envelope.

On the front, Richard had written:

FOR CLAIRE—ONLY IF THE BOYS' CUSTODY IS EVER CHALLENGED.

Adrian leaned toward his lawyer.

Evelyn stared straight ahead.

The judge opened it.

The first document was a notarized statement.

The second was a set of bank records.

The third was an amendment to a trust established for Owen and Luke.

The judge read silently.

Then he looked up.

"Mr. Bennett, are you currently in personal debt exceeding one million dollars?"

Adrian's lawyer stood.

"Your Honor, I don't see the relevance—"

"I asked Mr. Bennett."

Adrian swallowed.

"No."

Claire heard Evelyn breathe out.

The judge looked back at the documents.

"Then someone appears to have submitted false financial information either to this court or to the trustee managing your sons' accounts."

Adrian went pale.

Claire felt Owen lean closer to her.

She had not known exactly what the envelope contained.

Richard's instructions had been clear: do not open it yourself. Give it to your attorney.

Now she understood why.

The trust was worth nearly eight million dollars.

And according to Richard's statement, Adrian had once tried to borrow against it.

He had been refused.

The judge turned another page.

"Mrs. Bennett," he said to Claire, "did you know that under the amended trust, the parent with primary residential custody may request reimbursement for the children's housing, education, and medical expenses?"

Claire shook her head.

"No, Your Honor."

Adrian closed his eyes.

And suddenly the entire custody case looked different.

This might never have been about who loved the boys more.

It might have been about who could reach their money.
