The Account No One Mentioned

Chapter 13 - The Account No One Mentioned
Susan sent the forgotten page to the forensic accountant.
At first, it looked unrelated to custody.
Then the accountant traced a series of transfers.
Evelyn had moved money through an offshore account after Richard became ill.
Some of the funds belonged to her personally.
Some came from a family investment partnership.
And one transfer—four hundred thousand dollars—went to a company controlled by Adrian.
The date mattered.
It was two weeks after Richard refused Adrian's second request for trust money.
Claire stared at the report.
"So Evelyn gave him the money anyway."
"Yes."
"What happened to it?"
Susan hesitated.
"Most of it disappeared into a development project."
"Most?"
The remaining seventy-five thousand dollars had paid for a private investigator.
Claire went cold.
The investigator had followed her for months.
Photographed her.
Tracked school pickups.
Recorded the nights she stayed at her sister's house.
Documented the day she cried in a grocery-store parking lot after a therapy appointment.
Those images later appeared in Adrian's custody filing as evidence that Claire was unstable.
The story had been built before the divorce was even filed.
Claire felt physically sick.
They had not reacted to her leaving.
They had prepared for it.
Susan looked angry in a way Claire had never seen.
"This changes things."
The private investigator had not broken the law by observing Claire in public.
But the financial trail showed premeditation.
A coordinated attempt to build a custody narrative tied to Adrian's money problems.
Claire thought of all the months she had blamed herself.
Maybe I am too emotional.
Maybe the boys would be safer in the big house.
Maybe I'm ruining their lives.
Now she saw the machinery behind those doubts.
Adrian and Evelyn had not simply attacked her in court.
May you like
They had taught her to question herself long before they arrived there.
And Claire was done learning their version of the truth.
