The Woman Behind the Strategy

Chapter 08 - The Woman Behind the Strategy
Adrian fired his first attorney.
Then he hired a more aggressive one.
Evelyn paid the retainer.
That fact came out during financial disclosure.
So did something else.
Adrian's debts were worse than anyone knew.
He owed money on two failed developments.
He had taken personal loans from business partners.
He had borrowed against a vacation property without Claire's knowledge.
And three months before filing for custody, Evelyn had paid off one of his creditors.
Claire assumed Evelyn was rescuing her son.
Susan saw something different.
"Look at the date."
The payment occurred one day before Adrian filed for temporary custody.
Then Evelyn transferred another fifty thousand dollars to him labeled LEGAL AND FAMILY EXPENSES.
Claire felt cold.
"She financed it."
"Looks that way."
When Evelyn was questioned again, she denied controlling Adrian.
Then Susan showed her a series of text messages.
File before Claire understands the trust.
Do not let her move the boys out of state.
Once residential custody is established, we have leverage.
Evelyn stopped answering questions.
Her lawyer requested a break.
Outside the courtroom, Claire found Evelyn alone near the elevators.
"Why?" Claire asked.
Evelyn's face remained composed.
"For my grandsons."
"Don't say that."
"You were leaving the family."
"I was leaving Adrian."
"Same thing."
Claire finally understood.
To Evelyn, family was not love.
It was ownership.
People belonged inside the structure she controlled.
Claire had filed for divorce.
That made her dangerous.
"You were willing to destroy me to keep the boys close."
Evelyn looked at her.
"No, Claire."
Her voice was almost gentle.
"I was willing to make sure you couldn't take them away."
The elevator doors opened.
May you like
Evelyn stepped inside.
Before they closed, she added, "And I still am."
