The Truth About Jax

Chapter 10 - The Truth About Jax
Victor’s arrest made headlines.
The stolen vehicle network collapsed.
Several former associates cooperated.
Old cases reopened.
Jax expected relief.
Instead, he felt empty.
He had spent years blaming himself for Caleb’s disappearance.
Then he blamed Emily.
Then Nora.
Now he understood that everyone had carried some part of the truth.
Including him.
Emily visited the diner after leaving the hospital.
She sat across from Jax.
“You want to know why I really left?”
“I thought I knew.”
“You know half.”
Emily explained that Victor had shown her photographs of Jax accepting cash beside a stolen motorcycle.
Jax remembered.
He had repaired the bike.
He had no idea it was stolen.
But Emily believed Victor’s story.
She thought Jax was involved.
“I was afraid of you.”
Jax looked wounded.
“You knew me.”
“I thought I did.”
“And you never asked.”
“No.”
Emily began crying.
Jax stared out the window.
“How many years did we lose because none of us asked the right question?”
Emily did not answer.
Luke walked in carrying a school backpack.
He sat beside Jax.
“Mom says you’re my uncle.”
Jax nodded.
“Looks that way.”
“Do I have to call you Uncle Jax?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Jax smiled.
“What are you going to call me?”
Luke thought carefully.
“Jax.”
“Creative.”
Luke grinned.

Emily watched them.
For the first time in years, she allowed herself to imagine a life that was not controlled by fear.
