Emily’s Decision

Chapter 15 - Emily’s Decision
Emily received a job offer in Denver.
Better salary.
Fresh start.
She considered taking it.
Jax tried not to react.
“You should do what’s best for Luke.”
Emily looked at him.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“Sometimes adults use children as an excuse for what they’re afraid to choose.”
Jax understood.
Emily had spent nineteen years running.
This time, she wanted to decide differently.
She turned down the job.
Not because of Jax.
Because Luke had a school he loved.
Friends.
Nora.
The garage.
A community.
Roots.
Jax respected that.
A week later, Emily asked him to dinner.
“Is this a date?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Unless you want it to be.”
Jax nearly dropped his coffee.
Emily smiled.
“Still slow, Mercer.”
He looked at her.
Nineteen years had changed both of them.
They could not recreate who they had been.
Maybe they should not try.
“Dinner,” he said.
“Dinner.”
No promises.
No rewriting the past.

Just one evening.
Then another.
