The Letter That Was Never Hers

Chapter 04 - The Letter That Was Never Hers
Jax drove to Emily’s old house.
Luke sat beside him.
Nora insisted on coming.
“She brought that boy into my diner,” she said. “I’m not walking away now.”
Emily’s house had been searched recently.
Drawers open.
Cushions moved.
Closet doors hanging wide.
Nothing obviously stolen.
Luke went to his mother’s bedroom.
He returned carrying a small metal box.
“My mom said never open this unless she disappeared.”
Jax stared at him.
“Did she think she would?”
Luke nodded.
Inside the box were letters.
Dozens.
All addressed to Jax.
None had been mailed.
Jax opened the first.
It was dated nineteen years earlier.
Jax,
I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.
Someone told me Caleb was in trouble.
Someone said you would be next.
I thought leaving would protect you.
Jax sat down.
The letter he had received all those years ago—the one saying Emily loved someone else—had not been written by her.
Another letter mentioned Caleb.
He had discovered stolen motorcycles were being moved through a network of repair shops.
One of those shops belonged to the motorcycle club Jax rode with at the time.
Caleb believed someone close to them was involved.
Then Jax found a name.
Victor Kane.
Jax closed his eyes.
Victor had been their club president.
He was also the man who comforted Jax after Emily disappeared.
The man who helped search for Caleb.
The man Jax had trusted like family.
Nora whispered, “Where is Victor now?”
Jax looked at her.
“Running the biggest dealership in the county.”
Luke pointed to the final letter.
It was written only three days earlier.
If Luke finds Jax, tell him Caleb never abandoned him.
He stayed away because Victor threatened the people he loved.
Jax folded the letter slowly.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man spoke.
“You should have left the past buried.”
May you like
Jax recognized the voice.
Victor Kane.
