Chapter 19 - The Folded Paper
One year after Luke walked into the diner, Jax found the small folded paper the boy had carried.
Ask about Caleb.
He framed it.
Emily laughed when she saw it.
“You frame everything now?”
“Apparently.”
Luke entered carrying a new photograph.
It showed Emily, Jax, Nora and Luke standing outside the diner.
He placed it beside the old one.
“Better.”
Jax looked at him.
“Why?”
“Everyone’s here.”
Jax felt something tighten in his chest.
Caleb was not in the new photograph.
But somehow, he was.
In Luke’s eyes.
In the garage.
In the stories.
In the lessons Jax had learned too late.
Emily leaned against Jax.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
This time, he meant it.
Victor was in prison.
The network was gone.
The legal cases were ending.
The past no longer arrived every morning demanding an answer.
