Nora decided to sell the diner.
Jax found the listing online.
He confronted her.
“Why?”
“I’m tired.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t get to tell me how I feel.”
“You’re running.”
Nora’s expression hardened.
“That sounds familiar.”
Jax sat down.
She was right.
Nora confessed that every day she saw him at the counter, she remembered Caleb.
Every coffee she poured.
Every joke.
Every Christmas dinner.
She carried guilt.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid.”
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
Jax looked around the diner.
This place had become part of his life.
Luke had walked through its door holding the truth.
“You made a mistake.”
Nora laughed bitterly.
“A seventeen-year mistake.”
“Still a mistake.”
She looked at him.
“Can you forgive me?”
Jax thought about Caleb.
About Emily.
About himself.
“I can try.”
Nora cried.
Jax added, “But don’t sell the diner.”
“Why?”
“Because Luke likes the pancakes.”
“That child puts ketchup on them.”
“I know.”
“That should be illegal.”
Jax smiled.
For the first time since the old photograph appeared, the diner felt normal again.
