Chapter 17 - The Diner Wall
Nora created a new wall inside Miller’s Diner.
Photographs of local families.
Old customers.
Veterans.
Graduates.
People who had passed away.
At the center hung the faded photograph Luke carried on his first day.
Beneath it was a small plaque.
FAMILY IS SOMETIMES THE PEOPLE WHO COME BACK.
Jax hated the wording.
“It’s sentimental.”
Nora smiled.
“You cried when you read it.”
“I had dust in my eye.”
“Inside the diner?”
“Lots of dust.”
Luke laughed.
Emily stood beside him.
Nora looked around at the crowded room.
She had decided not to sell.
Business was better than ever after the newspaper wrote about Luke’s story.
But Nora refused interviews.
“This is a diner,” she said. “People come here to eat, not watch me cry.”
Still, every afternoon, Luke sat in the same booth.
Sometimes Jax joined him.
Sometimes Emily.
Sometimes all three.
