The cemetery was nearly empty by the time the last prayer ended.

Cold wind moved through the bare branches above the graves, carrying the faint smell of wet earth and white lilies. Daniel Mercer stood several feet from the open grave in a black suit, hands locked at his sides, staring at the polished casket that held the woman he had once loved and spent twelve years trying to forget.

Her name was Emily Carter now.

To everyone else, she had been a quiet elementary school counselor, a devoted mother, and a woman who rarely spoke about her past.

To Daniel, she had once been the person who knew every version of him.

Then she had disappeared.

He had spent years believing she had chosen another life.

A movement near the grave pulled him from the past.

A little girl stood beside an older man in a dark overcoat. She looked about nine, maybe ten, with long brown hair and a face swollen from crying. She clutched a framed photograph against her chest as if someone might take it away.

Daniel glanced at the picture.

His breath stopped.

Emily was in it.

Beside her was the same little girl, younger and smiling.

The child looked up.

Her eyes met Daniel’s.

For one terrible second, neither of them moved.

Then the girl whispered, “You’re Daniel.”

It was not a question.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

The older man beside her lowered his gaze.

Daniel stepped closer. “How do you know my name?”
