The Letter Emily Never Sent

Chapter 03 - The Letter Emily Never Sent
Daniel opened the letter inside his car.
He sat behind the steering wheel while rain tapped lightly against the windshield.
Lily and Thomas waited beneath the cemetery awning several yards away.
The letter began simply.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, I waited too long.
He stopped.
His hands were already shaking.
Emily wrote that twelve years earlier, shortly after Daniel proposed, she had discovered she was pregnant.
She had been frightened but happy.
She planned to tell him the night he returned from a business trip.
But before Daniel came home, her father found the pregnancy test.
Thomas believed Daniel would destroy Emily’s future.
Daniel had been twenty-seven then, ambitious, frequently traveling, building a company that barely survived its first year.
Thomas had never trusted him.
According to Emily, her father told her Daniel had called and said he wanted nothing more to do with her.
Daniel closed his eyes.
That call had never happened.
Emily’s letter continued.
She wrote that she tried contacting him, but every message came back unanswered.
Daniel suddenly remembered losing access to the phone number he used during that period after a business account was abruptly canceled.
Thomas had controlled the family phone plan.
Daniel felt sick.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
Lily is your daughter.
Daniel read it three times.
The words remained the same.
His daughter.
The child standing outside beneath the awning, hugging a photograph of her dead mother, was his daughter.
Daniel pressed one hand against his mouth.
He had missed her first steps.
Her first birthday.
Her first day of school.
Every Christmas.
Every fever.
Every scraped knee.
Every bedtime story.
Not because he had abandoned her.
Because someone had decided he did not deserve to know she existed.
The final paragraph broke what remained of his composure.
I was afraid that telling you after so many years would make you hate me. But Lily deserves the truth, even if I was too afraid to face it while I was alive.
Daniel folded the letter carefully.
Then he looked through the rain toward Lily.
She was watching him.
Waiting.
Daniel stepped out of the car.
Thomas moved forward.
Daniel walked straight past him.
He stopped in front of Lily and lowered himself to his knees.
His voice barely worked.
“Your mom told me the truth.”
Lily’s chin trembled.
“Are you my dad?”
Daniel could not lie.
May you like
“Yes.”
And Thomas Carter closed his eyes because he knew the next truth would be about him.
