Emily’s Last Request

Chapter 11 - Emily’s Last Request

They opened the envelope in Emily’s living room.

Lily sat between them.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

No legal language.

No accusation.

Just Emily.

If you are reading this together, then at least one miracle happened.

Daniel had to stop.

Thomas turned away.

Lily took the letter and continued reading aloud.

Emily wrote that she had spent too many years afraid.

Afraid Daniel would hate her.

Afraid Thomas would fall apart.

Afraid Lily would discover that adults she loved had failed each other.

She asked them not to make Lily carry those failures.

Then came the request.

Take her to Lake Winona.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The lake had been where Daniel proposed to Emily.

Lily had never been there.

Two weeks later, the three of them drove north.

The cabin Emily rented every summer still stood near the shore.

Inside, they found a guestbook.

Emily had signed it every year.

At first, only her name.

Then Emily and Lily.

Beside one entry, when Lily was six, Emily had written:

Maybe next year I’ll finally be brave.

Daniel traced the words.

Lily whispered, “She wanted you here.”

Daniel nodded.

Thomas stepped outside.

Daniel followed.

At the end of the dock, Thomas said, “I thought keeping you away would keep her safe.”

Daniel looked over the water.

“You didn’t trust her to choose.”

“No.”

“That was the real mistake.”

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

For the first time, Daniel believed him.

May you like

Not because Thomas had apologized.

Because Thomas had finally stopped defending himself.
