Daniel could hardly believe it.
Thomas had spent the afternoon confessing.
By evening, his attorney was arguing that Daniel was a stranger with no established relationship to Lily.
Technically, that was true.
Morally, it was unbearable.
Daniel confronted him.
“You filed before the funeral?”
Thomas did not deny it.
“I was scared.”
“That seems to be your excuse for everything.”
“I raised her, Daniel.”
“And I didn’t because you made sure I couldn’t.”
Thomas’s voice broke.
“You think biology erases ten years of breakfast, school pickups, nightmares, doctor visits?”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer but kept his voice low.
“That is exactly why I’m not trying to erase you.”
Thomas stared at him.
“I don’t believe you.”
“That’s because you would.”
The words landed.
The court scheduled an emergency guardianship hearing.
Until then, Lily remained with Thomas.
Daniel received visitation.
The arrangement felt absurd.
He needed legal permission to spend time with his own daughter.
Yet Daniel refused to let bitterness infect those hours.
On Saturday, he took Lily to a bookstore.
She loved mystery novels.
On Sunday, they went for pancakes.
Emily had been right.
Daniel still ordered blueberry.
Lily laughed when she discovered he drowned them in maple syrup.
Small things began building a bridge between them.
Then one afternoon Lily asked, “Would Mom have married you?”
Daniel did not know how to answer.
“She said you asked.”
“I did.”
“What happened to the ring?”
Daniel looked away.
“I still have it.”
Lily stared at him.
“For twelve years?”
Daniel nodded.
That evening, when he returned Lily to Thomas’s house, a reporter was waiting outside.
Someone had leaked the custody case.
