Maya examined the folder.
The evidence was devastating.
Thomas had effectively admitted interference.
But another document mattered more.
Emily had met with a family lawyer three months before her death.
The attorney had prepared a statement.
Emily wrote that she wanted Lily to know Daniel and asked the court to consider Daniel her first choice as long-term guardian.
She also wrote something unexpected.
My father loves Lily deeply. I do not want Lily punished for his mistakes by losing him too.
Daniel read the line slowly.
Emily had anticipated everything.
Even from the edge of her own life, she was protecting everyone.
Including the father who had betrayed her.
Daniel met Thomas that evening.
“I’m withdrawing my request for sole custody.”
Thomas stared at him.
“What?”
“I’ll ask for primary guardianship with guaranteed access for you.”
“You’d do that?”
“For Lily.”
Thomas lowered his head.
Daniel continued.
“But there’s one condition.”
Thomas looked up.
“You tell the court the truth. All of it.”
Thomas’s face tightened.
“That could destroy me.”
Daniel’s expression did not change.
“It already destroyed Emily.”
Thomas went pale.
“And it cost me twelve years.”
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Thomas nodded.
At the next hearing, he took the witness stand.
He admitted everything.
The lies.
The intercepted messages.
The false story he told Emily.
The false story he told Daniel.
The judge listened without interruption.
When Thomas finished, the courtroom was silent.
Then the judge asked the question no one expected.
“Mr. Carter, why should this court trust your judgment concerning this child now?”
Thomas looked toward Lily.
His voice cracked.
“It shouldn’t.”
Daniel looked at him sharply.
