Thomas Faces the Man He Used to Be

Chapter 16 - Thomas Faces the Man He Used to Be

Forgiveness did not erase consequences.

Thomas still had to live with what he had done.

He began volunteering at a family mediation center.

At first, Daniel thought it was guilt.

Maybe it was.

But then Thomas became good at it.

He spoke to parents who were angry enough to use children as weapons.

He told them, carefully, what fear had cost his family.

He never used Daniel’s name.

Never used Lily’s.

But the lesson was always the same.

“You can protect someone so hard that you stop seeing what they actually need.”

One afternoon, Daniel arrived early to pick Thomas up.

He overheard a young father say, “Her mother won’t let me see my son.”

Thomas became very still.

Then he said, “Document everything. Stay calm. Keep showing up. Don’t let anger become the story they tell about you.”

Daniel remained outside the room.

Later, in the car, Thomas asked, “How long were you standing there?”

“Long enough.”

Thomas sighed.

“You think I’m a hypocrite?”

Daniel considered it.

“No.”

Thomas looked surprised.

“I think you finally understand the damage.”

Thomas stared out the window.

“That doesn’t fix it.”

“No.”

Daniel started the engine.

“But Lily doesn’t need you to spend the rest of your life punishing yourself.”

Thomas looked at him.

“Did she tell you that?”

“No.”

Daniel smiled.

“She told me to tell you because she’s tired of you looking miserable at dinner.”

Thomas laughed despite himself.

That evening, he cooked.

Rebecca complained about the seasoning.

And the house once again filled with laughter.
