The Anniversary of Emily’s Death

Chapter 15 - The Anniversary of Emily’s Death

A year passed.

The cemetery looked different in spring.

Lily brought yellow tulips because Emily hated white funeral flowers.

Daniel brought coffee.

Thomas brought nothing.

“I never know what to bring,” he admitted.

Lily handed him one tulip.

“Bring this.”

They stood together before Emily’s headstone.

For a long time, no one spoke.

Daniel finally said, “You should have been here.”

Lily glanced up.

“At the funeral?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at the grave.

“In our lives.”

Thomas swallowed.

Lily slipped one hand into Daniel’s and the other into Thomas’s.

“We’re here now.”

It was such a simple sentence.

It carried a year of therapy, arguments, paperwork, mistakes, apologies, and second chances.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

She was taller.

Stronger.

She still kept Emily’s letters in a box beside her bed.

She still wore the engagement ring on the silver chain for special occasions.

But grief no longer entered every room before her.

They returned home that afternoon.

Rebecca was waiting with dinner.

Thomas complained about the seasoning.

Rebecca told him to cook next time.

Lily laughed so hard she nearly spilled her drink.

Daniel stood in the kitchen doorway watching them.

A year earlier, his life had been orderly, successful, and empty in ways he had never admitted.

Now it was loud.

Complicated.

Occasionally infuriating.

And full.

Then Lily walked over carrying an envelope from school.

“Dad?”

Daniel still felt something every time she called him that.

“What?”

She smiled.

“I got into the summer science program.”

He hugged her before she could finish.

Thomas shouted from the table, “I told you she would!”

Rebecca smiled.

And Daniel realized Emily’s final gift had not been the truth alone.

It had been the life that truth made possible.
