The House Emily Left Behind

Chapter 05 - The House Emily Left Behind
Emily’s house stood on a quiet street outside Hartford.
Daniel arrived the following afternoon.
Lily had asked him to come.
Thomas opened the door but said little.
Inside, Daniel found pieces of the life he should have known.
School photographs lined the hallway.
Lily at five with missing front teeth.
Lily at seven holding a science-fair ribbon.
Lily at nine dressed as Amelia Earhart for Halloween.
Daniel stopped at every frame.
He felt like a man visiting his own memories after someone else had lived them.
Lily appeared from the hallway carrying a cardboard box.
“Mom kept this in her closet.”
Inside were dozens of letters.
Every one addressed to Daniel.
None mailed.
He opened one.
Lily lost her first tooth today.
Another.
She asked me why some kids have dads who live somewhere else.
Another.
I saw you on television. You looked happy. I told myself that was enough.
Daniel sat down heavily.
Emily had written him for years.
On birthdays.
On holidays.
On nights when Lily was sick.
She had documented an entire fatherhood he never got to experience.
Then Daniel noticed something beneath the letters.
A small legal envelope.
Inside was a will.
Emily had named Daniel as Lily’s preferred guardian if she died.
Thomas was listed as temporary caregiver until Daniel could be contacted.
Daniel looked up.
Thomas stood across the room.
“You knew about this?”
Thomas nodded.
“For six months.”
Daniel rose.
“And you still didn’t call me?”
“I begged her to change it.”
Lily appeared behind them.
“Why?”
Thomas froze.
The little girl’s voice was barely audible.
“Grandpa, why didn’t you want him to know me?”
Thomas’s face collapsed.
May you like
Because for the first time, the person asking him was not Daniel.
It was the child he claimed he had protected.
