The Story Everyone Got Wrong

Chapter 08 - The Story Everyone Got Wrong

The internet chose its villain quickly.

Daniel.

Articles repeated the same facts.

Rich CEO.

Unknown father.

Sudden custody claim.

Grieving grandfather.

Very few mentioned that Daniel had not known Lily existed.

Even fewer explained why.

Daniel’s company board urged him to release a statement.

He refused.

“This is my daughter’s life, not a public relations problem.”

His attorney, Maya Brooks, agreed.

But Thomas’s attorney did not share their restraint.

During a televised courthouse interview, he said Thomas had “provided stability when others were absent.”

Daniel watched the clip twice.

Others were absent.

The phrase was carefully chosen.

It made Daniel sound like a man who had walked away.

Lily saw it at school.

A classmate showed her the video.

That night she called Daniel.

“Did you leave Mom?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

“Then why are people saying you did?”

“Because people sometimes tell a simple story when the truth is complicated.”

There was silence.

Then Lily said, “Grandpa’s lawyer said it.”

Daniel felt anger rise.

But he did not attack Thomas in front of her.

“Your grandfather loves you. Adults sometimes make bad decisions when they’re scared.”

Lily sighed.

“You say that a lot.”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I’ve had practice lately.”

The next morning, something changed.

Thomas arrived at Daniel’s office without his attorney.

He looked exhausted.

“I didn’t authorize that interview.”

Daniel said nothing.

Thomas placed a folder on the desk.

Inside were records from twelve years earlier.

Phone bills.

Canceled service requests.

Copies of messages.

And one handwritten note Thomas had kept.

A message Daniel had left for Emily.

Please tell her I came by. I don’t understand what happened. I love her.

Thomas had never delivered it.

Daniel stared at the note.

“Why keep this?”

May you like

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“To remind myself there was a point when I could still have fixed it.”
