Chapter 10 - The Uniform and the Name

Ethan attended Caleb’s public town meeting in uniform.

His colonel had advised against it.

Ethan went anyway, careful not to speak on behalf of the Army.

The high school auditorium was full.

Caleb stood onstage beneath the county seal, presenting himself as a sheriff under attack by criminals and political opportunists.

Then Ethan walked down the center aisle.

The room became quiet.

Caleb forced a smile.

“My nephew has been under tremendous emotional strain.”

Ethan stopped before the stage.

“I am not here as your nephew.”

Caleb’s smile disappeared.

“I am here as a citizen whose family was harmed by evidence you helped hide.”

Reporters lifted cameras.

Ethan described the letters, the altered fire report, and Luke’s ledger.

He did not speculate.

He stated facts.

Caleb leaned toward the microphone.

“You are dishonoring the man who raised you.”

Ethan looked toward Grant’s photograph displayed beside the flag.

“No. I am refusing to let what he did hide behind what he did for me.”

The sentence spread across the country by morning.

Some praised Ethan.

Others called him disloyal.

His promotion remained suspended.

But three retired deputies contacted Ava after seeing the meeting.

One admitted Grant ordered officers away from Route Nine before the fire.

Another remembered Caleb cleaning soot from his uniform despite claiming he never entered the building.

The third had kept a copy of the dispatch log.

It showed Grant and Caleb arrived eleven minutes before the first emergency call.

Caleb was arrested at the sheriff’s office.

As deputies escorted him outside, he shouted that Mason had destroyed the Hale family.

Ethan watched from across the street.

“No,” he said quietly.

“The truth exposed what was already broken.”
