The Fire on Route Nine

Chapter 03 - The Fire on Route Nine
The fire happened thirty-one years earlier at Cross Brothers Motor Works.
Mason and his older brother, Luke, repaired motorcycles and restored old engines in a cinder-block garage off Route Nine.
Laura worked at the diner across the road.
She and Mason planned to marry after the baby was born.
Grant Hale was a young deputy then.
He had known Laura since high school and never accepted that she chose someone else.
According to the court record, Mason set the fire after arguing with Luke over money.
Luke died inside.
Mason survived with burns on one arm.
A gas can bearing his fingerprints was found near the rear door.
Grant was the first officer at the scene.
He also became the prosecution’s most important witness.
Mason received twenty-five years.
Ethan sat at the kitchen table reading until sunrise.
Mason remained in the garage.
Laura sat across from Ethan, twisting a napkin between her fingers.
“Were you married to Grant before Mason’s trial?”
“No.”
“When?”
“Eight months after Mason was sentenced.”
Ethan looked up.
“That fast?”
“I was twenty-two, pregnant, terrified, and everyone in town believed Mason killed his brother.”
“Did you?”
Laura’s eyes filled.
“For a while.”
The admission seemed to hurt someone in the garage. Ethan heard a tool fall, though Mason did not enter.
Laura continued.
“Grant told me Mason confessed privately. He said Mason wanted me to forget him and raise you without the shame.”
“Did Mason confess?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because the box contains a copy of the original fire investigator’s report.”
Ethan found it beneath the court transcripts.
The investigator noted that the fire began in two separate locations.
The gas can had been moved after the flames were under control.
That finding never appeared at trial.
At the bottom was a handwritten note:
Deputy Hale requested revision before submission.
Ethan read the sentence again.
The man who taught him that honor meant doing the right thing when no one was watching had changed a report to convict an innocent man.
Then Ethan found a second document.

A receipt from the county evidence room.
The gas can had been signed out by Deputy Grant Hale six hours before the fire.
