The Woman Everyone Blamed
Chapter 08 - The Woman Everyone Blamed
News of Mason’s exoneration and the reopened investigation reached local media.
Within hours, strangers blamed Laura.
Some accused her of marrying Grant for security.
Others asked how a mother could let her son grow up without his biological father.
No one asked what a frightened twenty-two-year-old woman could have done against two deputies, a prosecutor, and an entire town convinced Mason was guilty.
A reporter waited outside the grocery store.
“Mrs. Hale, did you know your husband framed Mason Cross?”
Laura froze.
Ethan stepped between them.
“Leave her alone.”
The clip went online.
Commenters called Ethan an angry soldier protecting a lying mother.
Laura stopped leaving the house.
Mason found her one morning in the garage, sitting where the motorcycle had been.
“I believed him,” she said.
Mason leaned against the workbench.
“So did the jury.”
“I should have believed you.”
“You had a newborn and Grant controlled every door.”
“That doesn’t make it disappear.”
“No.”
He looked toward the hidden letters.
“But shame is another locked room. You do not have to keep living in it because Grant built it.”
Laura finally looked at him.
“Do you hate me?”
Mason took a long breath.
“I hated the version of you Grant described.”
“And now?”
“Now I see the woman who survived him.”
Their history did not return as romance.
Too much had happened.
But something gentler began.
Recognition.
Ethan watched from the doorway.
For the first time, he understood that Laura and Mason were not two people who simply failed to find each other.
They were victims of the same lie, grieving different lives.
Then Ava called.
Forensic technicians had removed the motorcycle’s fuel tank.
Inside they found a sealed plastic tube containing a key and a note written by Luke Cross hours before the fire.
