The Promotion Board
Chapter 15 - The Promotion Board
Ethan’s command cleared him of wrongdoing.
His suspended promotion board was rescheduled.
During the interview, a general asked whether Ethan regretted publicly challenging his county sheriff while in uniform.
Ethan answered carefully.
“I regret that my family’s actions created the conflict.”
“That is not the question.”
“No, sir. I do not regret stating verified facts while making clear I spoke as a private citizen.”
The general leaned back.
“Loyalty matters in the Army.”
“Yes, sir.”
“How do you define it?”
Ethan thought of Grant.
Caleb.
Laura.
Mason.
“Loyalty is not helping someone hide wrongdoing. It is standing close enough to tell them the truth before their choices destroy other people.”
The room remained silent.
Two weeks later, Ethan was promoted to master sergeant.
Mason attended the ceremony in a clean black shirt with his tattoos visible beneath the sleeves.
Laura sat beside him.
When Ethan’s colonel invited family forward, both hesitated.
Ethan looked directly at Mason.
“Come on.”
Mason joined him.
Laura pinned one side of Ethan’s new rank.
Mason pinned the other.
His fingers trembled.
Afterward, Mason whispered, “I missed the first one.”
Ethan looked at the insignia.
“You’re here for this one.”
Photographers captured the moment.
The image spread online.
Not because a wrongfully convicted biker stood beside a soldier.
May you like
Because Ethan introduced him before the ceremony with two words Mason had stopped expecting.
“My father.”
