Chapter 13 - Laura Takes the Stand

Caleb’s trial drew national attention.

Laura testified on the fourth day.

She wore a white blouse like the one she had worn when Ethan came home.

Caleb’s attorney asked why she married Grant so soon after Mason’s conviction.

“I was pregnant, frightened, and told the man I loved had killed his brother.”

“Grant provided a home?”

“Yes.”

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“Did he care for your son?”

Laura looked toward Ethan.

“Yes.”

The attorney smiled.

“So Sheriff Hale was not the monster this story now suggests.”

Laura’s voice remained calm.

“A person does not need to be cruel every hour to control someone’s life.”

The courtroom became still.

She explained how Grant shaped every choice by controlling information.

He told her Mason rejected her.

He told Mason Laura wanted no contact.

He told Ethan his biological father never cared.

“He did not need chains,” Laura said. “He only needed each of us to believe the others had chosen to leave.”

Caleb stared at the table.

The prosecutor played Grant’s confession.

Caleb’s attorney challenged its reliability, but Luke’s ledger, the dispatch log, and the photographs supported every major detail.

Caleb eventually took the stand against his lawyer’s advice.

He blamed Grant.

He claimed the locked door was an accident.

Then the prosecutor showed a photograph from the disposable camera.

Caleb stood beside the side entrance holding the padlock before the fire began.

The jury deliberated six hours.

Guilty of conspiracy, evidence tampering, obstruction, and manslaughter.

Mason closed his eyes.

Laura reached for his hand.

Ethan stood behind them.

For the first time in thirty-one years, the official record said Luke Cross had not died because of his brother.
