The Motorcycle Grant Stole

Chapter 16 - The Motorcycle Grant Stole

The black motorcycle was released from evidence after Caleb’s trial.

It legally belonged to Mason.

Grant had changed the registration years earlier, but the original frame number and purchase record proved ownership.

Mason brought it back to the garage.

Ethan watched him remove the old Hale license plate.

“You going to repaint it?”

“No.”

The tank carried scratches, smoke marks, and the small line Mason carved the night Laura announced her pregnancy.

“History doesn’t become honest because you make it pretty.”

They rebuilt the engine together.

Mason taught Ethan how Luke timed the valves by sound.

Ethan installed new brakes.

Laura chose a dark blue leather seat.

When the motorcycle was finished, Mason handed Ethan the key.

“It’s yours.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Grant already took it from you once.”

“I’m giving it.”

“That doesn’t mean I should accept.”

Mason smiled.

“You argue like your mother.”

Laura called from the office, “That is not an insult.”

Ethan turned the key in his hand.

“Then we share it.”

They took the first ride together.

Mason drove.

Ethan followed on another restored bike.

They rode Route Nine past the site of the old fire, then continued into open country.

At a roadside overlook, Ethan asked about Luke.

Mason told stories that never appeared in court records.

Luke dancing badly at Laura’s diner.

Luke sleeping beneath motorcycles during overnight repairs.

Luke pretending not to cry when he learned he would become an uncle.

Ethan listened.
