The Sheriff at the Door

Chapter 06 - The Sheriff at the Door
Caleb arrived before sunset in full uniform.
Two patrol cars stopped outside.
He entered the garage without waiting for permission.
Mason stood beside the motorcycle.
Laura remained behind Ethan.
Caleb looked at the man his testimony helped imprison.
“You should have left town.”
Mason’s voice remained low.
“I tried that for thirty-one years.”
Caleb turned toward Ethan.
“Son, you don’t understand what kind of man he was.”
“Stop calling me son.”
The words surprised everyone.
Caleb’s face tightened.
Ethan held up the evidence receipt.
“I understand your signature.”
Caleb claimed Grant borrowed the gas can for a training demonstration.
He claimed the investigator made errors.
He claimed Mason’s exoneration was a technicality.
Ava entered from the driveway.
“It was a judicial finding of actual innocence.”
Caleb glared at her.
“This is my county.”
“Not this investigation.”
She presented a warrant authorizing removal of the metal box, letters, and motorcycle for forensic examination.
Caleb stepped toward the bike.
Mason moved between them.
For one dangerous second, the two men stood inches apart.
Ethan placed a hand against Mason’s chest.
“Not this way.”
Mason looked at him.
Ethan had not called him Dad.
He had not forgiven anything.
But he had stopped his biological father from giving Caleb the confrontation he wanted.
Ava’s team loaded the evidence.
Before leaving, Caleb pointed at Laura.
“You know what happens when people drag dead men through the mud.”
Laura met his eyes.
“For years, you counted on me being afraid of that sentence.”
Caleb looked toward Ethan.
“Your career will survive this only if you stay out of it.”
Ethan understood the threat.
His security clearance review was due in two months. A public family scandal involving wrongful conviction and police corruption could complicate everything.
Caleb smiled faintly.
“Grant gave you a future. Think carefully before you destroy his name.”
May you like
Ethan looked at the empty space where the motorcycle had stood.
“My future should never have required Mason to lose his.”
