Luke’s Memorial Ride

Chapter 18 - Luke’s Memorial Ride

Cross & Son Motor Works officially opened on the anniversary of Luke’s death.

Hundreds of motorcycles lined Route Nine.

Veterans rode beside former inmates.

Police officers from neighboring counties attended without ceremony.

A new sheriff represented Bellhaven after publicly apologizing for the department’s role in Mason’s wrongful conviction.

The old garage wall had been preserved behind glass.

Luke’s repaired toolbox sat beneath a photograph of the brothers.

Before the memorial ride, Mason stood before the crowd.

“I spent years thinking freedom would begin when a prison door opened,” he said.

He looked toward Ethan.

“It began when the truth gave me back my brother’s name and my son gave me a place in his life.”

Mason could not continue.

Ethan stepped beside him.

He finished the speech.

“This garage will teach people skills. But its first lesson is simpler.”

He looked across the crowd.

“A person is more than the worst story ever told about them.”

The riders started their engines.

The sound rolled across the county.

Laura rode in the sidecar of Mason’s restored motorcycle.

She complained about the helmet flattening her hair.

Mason told her she had complained about the same thing thirty-one years earlier.

Ethan rode beside them.

At the old fire site, every rider stopped.

They placed a steel memorial beside the road.

LUKE CROSS.

BROTHER. MECHANIC. TRUTH-TELLER.
