The Letter Ethan Finally Answered

Chapter 19 - The Letter Ethan Finally Answered
Ethan kept Mason’s 246 letters in a cedar box.
He read them slowly.
Some were angry.
Some hopeful.
Some contained ordinary advice Mason had no right to expect Ethan would ever hear.
Change your oil before the engine asks.
Never confuse silence with peace.
When someone offers you loyalty but demands your conscience, walk away.
The final letter had been written shortly before Mason’s exoneration.
Dear Ethan,
I may meet you soon. I am more afraid of that than I was of prison.
If you hate me, I will understand. If you believe the man who raised you, I will understand that too. I only need you to know I did not choose a life without you.
Ethan read it at the garage after everyone left.
Then he took out a clean sheet of paper.
Dear Dad,

It made everything honest.
Ethan folded the letter and placed it in an envelope.
He found Mason outside, closing the garage doors.
“What’s this?” Mason asked.
“My answer.”
Mason stared at the word written across the front.
Dad.
His eyes filled.
“You could have just told me.”
Ethan smiled.
“You waited thirty-one years for a letter. You’re getting one.”
Mason held the envelope against his chest.

Neither man tried to turn the moment into a speech.
They closed the garage together.
