The Woman on the Balcony Who Learned Her Daughter Was Still Alive

Chapter 01 - The Woman on the Balcony Who Learned Her Daughter Was Still Alive

## chapter 01 - The Man Who Interrupted the Celebration

The music from the ballroom followed Sophia Bennett onto the balcony.

Behind the tall glass doors, two hundred guests raised champagne to celebrate her father’s seventieth birthday and the merger that would place Bennett Development among the largest real-estate companies in New York.

Sophia wanted only air.

She stood at the stone railing in a pale gold evening dress, looking across the city lights and telling herself she could survive one more speech about family loyalty.

Then a man stepped out behind her.

“Hello, Sophia.”

She knew the voice before she turned.

Adrian Kane stood three feet away in a black suit, dark hair neatly combed, thin glasses catching the light from the ballroom. Fifteen years had sharpened his face, but nothing could hide the man she had once planned to marry.

Sophia’s fingers tightened around the railing.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

“I was invited.”

“By whom?”

“Someone who was tired of your father deciding who gets to know the truth.”

The glass doors opened again.

Richard Bennett, Sophia’s father, entered the balcony with his silver hair perfectly arranged and his expression already controlled.

Beside him came Vanessa Clarke, Adrian’s blonde fiancée, still wearing the black dress she had chosen for the announcement of their wedding date.

Vanessa looked from Adrian to Sophia.

“What is going on?”

Adrian did not take his eyes off Sophia.

“Ask Richard.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“This is neither the time nor the place.”

Adrian reached inside his jacket.

Sophia stepped back, but he removed only a folded photograph.

He held it between them.

It showed a teenage girl with dark hair, brown eyes, and a small crescent-shaped birthmark beside her left eyebrow.

Sophia’s breath stopped.

The girl had her eyes.

Adrian’s mouth.

And the same birthmark Sophia’s mother once called the Bennett moon.

“Who is she?” Sophia whispered.

Adrian’s voice shook for the first time.

“Her name is Emma.”

Richard moved forward.

“Put that away.”

Adrian ignored him.

“She turned fifteen last month.”

Sophia looked at the photograph again.

Fifteen.

The number opened a door in her memory.

A hospital room.

A silent monitor.

Her father holding her hand while a doctor said the baby had not survived.

Sophia’s knees weakened.

“No.”

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Richard said sharply, “The girl has nothing to do with Sophia.”

Adrian finally turned toward him.

“Then explain the DNA test.”

The ballroom continued glowing behind them as if nothing had changed.

Sophia looked at her father.

“Is my daughter alive?”

May you like

Richard did not answer.

And that silence told her more than any confession could.
