Chapter 13 - Richard’s Day in Court

The courtroom was full when Richard entered.

He looked smaller without the mansion, the boardroom, and the staff who once stood when he arrived.

Sophia testified first.

The prosecutor asked her to describe waking after childbirth.

She did not dramatize it.

She spoke about the empty bassinet.

Her father’s hand around hers.

The sentence he repeated.

It is over. You have to move forward.

Adrian testified about the lies that separated them.

Helen testified about the adoption process.

Maria played the recording.

Vanessa described the files Richard tried to burn.

Emma was not required to testify.

She chose to submit a written statement.

The judge read part of it aloud.

I love the mother who raised me. I am beginning to love the mother who carried me. Richard Bennett believed one woman had to disappear for the other to exist. He was wrong.

Richard finally pleaded guilty to avoid a public trial involving additional charges.

At sentencing, he asked to speak.

“I loved my daughter.”

Sophia looked at him.

Richard continued.

“I believed hardship would ruin her. I used my resources to remove it.”

The judge interrupted.

“You removed her child.”

Richard lowered his head.

He received a prison sentence, financial penalties, and a permanent prohibition from controlling adoption agencies or charitable foundations.

Voss received a longer sentence for arranging multiple fraudulent private adoptions.

The investigation uncovered three other families.

Sophia created a fund to help them search for relatives.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Sophia said only one thing.
