The Board Richard Built

Chapter 11 - The Board Richard Built
Richard refused to resign.
He told the board he had acted to protect Sophia from scandal and poverty.
Several directors believed him.
They had known Richard for decades.
They knew Sophia as the daughter he trained.
The board offered her a deal.
If she publicly described the adoption as a misunderstanding handled by outside counsel, she could return as chief operating officer.
Sophia read the proposal twice.
Then she released it to the employees.
In an open letter, she wrote:
A company that asks a woman to deny her stolen child in exchange for her job has already told the world what it values.
Three senior executives resigned within forty-eight hours.
Employees organized a petition demanding an independent investigation.
Investors panicked.
Richard called Sophia.
“You are destroying your inheritance.”
“You destroyed it fifteen years ago.”
“I gave you everything.”
“You took the one thing I would have chosen over all of it.”
Richard’s voice softened.
“I thought you would recover.”
“From believing my baby died?”
“You became strong.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
That sentence revealed the depth of his failure.
He saw her strength as evidence that the wound had been acceptable.
“No,” she said. “I became functional.”
She ended the call.
The board removed Richard after auditors found company money had paid Voss and the clinic.
Sophia was offered interim leadership.
She declined until employees received independent representation on the board.
The directors resisted.
She refused to negotiate.

A week later, they agreed.
Sophia returned to the building not as Richard’s daughter protecting his legacy, but as the woman determined to change it.
