Adrian proposed on the mansion balcony four years after the birthday party.
The building no longer belonged to Richard.
Sophia had sold the mansion to a cultural foundation, keeping only the right to use the ballroom once a year for the family-reunification fund.
After the annual benefit, Adrian asked Sophia to step outside.
She wore a pale gold dress again.
“You planned this,” she said.
“Carefully.”
“Did Emma approve?”
“She rewrote half my speech.”
Sophia laughed.
Adrian did not kneel immediately.
First, he handed her a folder.
She opened it.
Inside was a partnership agreement.
No hidden clauses.
No control over property.
No decisions about Emma.
At the bottom, Adrian had written:
This document has no legal force. I only wanted you to read everything before saying yes to anything involving me.
Sophia looked up.
He held out a ring.
“I loved you when we were young. I love you differently now.”
“How?”
“With fewer assumptions.”
“Romantic.”
“I had a better sentence, but Emma removed it.”
Sophia smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Emma, Helen, Maria, and Vanessa watched through the glass doors.
Adrian groaned when he noticed them.
“You said we would be alone.”
Emma opened the door.
“You already had fifteen years alone. We’re not wasting more time.”
