The Threat Against Helen

Chapter 10 - The Threat Against Helen
The message included details about Helen’s mortgage, David’s life-insurance policy, and Emma’s school.
Helen panicked.
She wanted to move Emma immediately.
Sophia understood the fear, but Emma refused.
“I spent fifteen years living inside other people’s decisions,” she said. “I’m not running because another man tells me to.”
Adrian traced the number to a prepaid phone purchased near Martin Voss’s childhood home in New Jersey.
Police found Voss in a motel two days later.
He carried forged passports and forty thousand dollars in cash.
During questioning, Voss blamed Richard.
He claimed Richard planned everything.
Richard blamed Voss.
Each man offered partial truth to save himself.
The district attorney charged both with conspiracy, fraud, falsifying medical records, and custodial interference.
Richard was released on bond.
Bennett Development’s board placed Sophia on temporary leave, arguing that the scandal created a conflict.
She walked out of the headquarters carrying one box.
Employees watched from behind glass walls.
Some looked sympathetic.
Others afraid.
Sophia had spent fifteen years building the company because Richard said it was the only thing that would never leave her.
Now it had removed her in one vote.
Emma waited downstairs with Helen.
She held a cardboard sign.
WELCOME TO UNEMPLOYMENT.
Sophia laughed for the first time in days.
“You made that?”
“Adrian helped with the spelling.”
Adrian stood near the curb holding coffee.
Sophia looked at him.
“You were involved?”
“Only as a consultant.”
Helen smiled.
The four of them ate pizza in Sophia’s apartment that night.
No boardroom.
No mansion.
No family name protecting them.
Emma told a terrible joke.
Adrian laughed too loudly.
Sophia looked around the table and realized the life Richard feared was already forming.

Not through control.
Through choice.
