The Day Emma Changed Her Name

Chapter 17 - The Day Emma Changed Her Name

At eighteen, Emma asked to change her name.

Helen became quiet.

Sophia tried not to react.

Adrian failed and dropped his coffee.

Emma laughed.

“I’m not removing Parker.”

She had chosen Emma Rose Parker Bennett Kane.

Helen blinked.

“That is too many names.”

“I have too much family.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

Emma continued.

“Parker is the life I lived. Bennett is the history I found. Kane is the father I’m learning.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You don’t owe me that.”

“I know.”

That was why it mattered.

They went to court together.

The clerk asked Emma whether the change was voluntary.

Emma smiled.

“Yes.”

The word carried eighteen years of other people deciding where she belonged.

Afterward, they celebrated at Helen’s house.

Sophia brought a cake with all four names.

The bakery misspelled Bennett.

Emma said that made it more authentic.

Richard sent a letter from prison.

He wrote that the name was beautiful.

Emma read the letter, folded it, and placed it inside a drawer.

She had not forgiven him.

She no longer feared the choice of whether to read his words.

That evening, Sophia found Emma sitting on the porch.

“Do you ever wish none of this happened?” Emma asked.

Sophia sat beside her.

“I wish you were never taken.”

“But then Helen wouldn’t be my mother.”

Sophia looked through the window at Helen washing dishes with Adrian.

“That is the cruelty of imagining another past. We cannot remove the pain without also removing people we love.”

Emma rested her head against Sophia’s shoulder.

“So what do we do?”

“We build from what is true now.”
