The First Time Sophia Saw Her Daughter

Chapter 04 - The First Time Sophia Saw Her Daughter
Sophia and Adrian reached Grand Central twenty minutes before Emma’s train departed.
Sophia ran through the terminal in borrowed flats Vanessa had sent down with a driver.
Adrian saw Emma first.
She sat alone on a wooden bench with a backpack at her feet and headphones around her neck. Her dark hair fell over one shoulder. She looked younger than the photograph.
More vulnerable.
More real.
Sophia stopped.
For fifteen years, she imagined the baby she lost.
She had never imagined a teenager scrolling through her phone beneath a station clock.
Adrian approached first.
“Emma.”
The girl looked up.
Her face changed when she saw Sophia.
She stood slowly.
“You came.”
Sophia could not speak.
Emma’s expression hardened.
“Your father said you didn’t want to meet me.”
“That is not true.”
“He said you signed the papers.”
“I didn’t.”
Emma folded her arms.
“You’re saying everyone lied except you?”
The question was fair.
Sophia swallowed.
“I am saying I was told you died.”
The anger disappeared from Emma’s face.
For a moment, she looked like a child.
“What?”
Sophia took the forged consent from Adrian.
“I woke after your birth and my father told me you were gone. I did not know you were alive until tonight.”
Emma stared at the document.
Her hands began to shake.
Adrian remained close but silent.
Sophia did not reach for Emma.
Every instinct told her to close the distance, but motherhood was not a right to touch a child who had just learned her history was false.
Emma whispered, “Helen said my birth mother wanted me to have a better life.”
“I wanted you.”
The words came out broken.
“I wanted you every day.”
Emma looked at Adrian.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“So neither of you looked for me?”
“We were told different lies,” Adrian said. “But you do not have to understand that tonight.”
Emma sat down again.
Sophia lowered herself onto the opposite end of the bench.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Then Emma asked, “What did you name me?”
Sophia’s eyes filled.
“Emily Rose.”
Emma touched the crescent birthmark beside her eyebrow.
“Helen named me Emma Rose.”
May you like
Sophia covered her mouth.
Somewhere in the separation, one small piece of her choice had survived.
