Vanessa moved to Chicago and joined a nonprofit investigating financial abuse in family-owned businesses.
She never returned to Adrian.
She did not become Sophia’s best friend.
But they remained connected by the truth they helped expose.
A year later, Vanessa called Sophia.
One of Voss’s former clients had contacted her.
A woman in Ohio believed her son’s adoption had also been arranged through forged consent.
Sophia’s company fund paid for legal representation and DNA testing.
The search reunited four families over the next three years.
Not every reunion ended happily.
Some biological parents wanted distance.
Some adopted children wanted no contact.
Sophia learned that truth did not guarantee a particular relationship.
It guaranteed the right to choose one.
Vanessa visited New York for a conference.
She met Sophia for coffee.
“You look happy,” Vanessa said.
“I am.”
“Is that irritatingly because of Adrian?”
“Partly.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I’m engaged.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow.
“To a woman who knows all my mistakes and still has terrible judgment.”
They laughed.
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“I used to think losing Adrian meant losing the future.”
Sophia understood.
“We were both taught one man’s choice could decide our entire lives.”
Vanessa nodded.
“It can’t.”
They finished their coffee.
No rivalry.
