The first email came from a woman named Rachel.
Then another from Melissa.
Then one from a former client named Dana.
All had seen the photograph.
All had recognized Ryan.
Each woman told a similar story.
Ryan said his marriage was ending.
Ryan said Elena cared more about money than love.
Ryan promised a future.
Then he disappeared when the woman asked too many questions.
Chloe read the messages beside Elena.
“I feel stupid.”
Elena looked at her.
“So do I.”
For the first time, they laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because sometimes humiliation becomes so complete that laughter is the only thing left.
Chloe apologized.
Not vaguely.
Not defensively.
She told Elena exactly what she had done wrong.
“I knew he was married,” she said. “Even if I believed his story, I should have walked away until it was finished.”
Elena appreciated the honesty.
Forgiveness did not come instantly.
But respect began there.
Then Chloe revealed one more thing.
Her father’s company had recorded every negotiation involving the villa.
Including a video conference with Ryan.
In the recording, Ryan said something chilling.
“My wife will sign whatever I put in front of her.”
Elena watched the clip once.
Then again.
The second time, she did not cry.
