Selling Nothing

Chapter 17 - Selling Nothing

Months passed.

The villa remained unsold.

Elena began restoring it.

Not because it was broken.

Because she was.

She replaced the furniture Ryan had chosen.

She reopened her mother’s garden.

She turned the locked storage room into a small writing studio.

On weekends, she invited women from a local financial recovery nonprofit to use the property for workshops.

Some were divorced.

Some were widowed.

Some had survived years of financial control.

Elena listened to their stories and heard pieces of her own.

One afternoon, Chloe visited.

She stood awkwardly beside the pool.

“I haven’t been back here since that day.”

Elena smiled faintly.

“Neither of us looked very dignified.”

Chloe laughed.

Then she grew serious.

“My father offered me a position in New York.”

“Are you going?”

“Yes.”

Elena nodded.

Chloe looked at the water.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“Do you forgive me?”

Elena thought about it.

“I don’t think forgiveness means pretending you didn’t hurt me.”

Chloe waited.

“But I don’t want to carry you as an enemy forever.”

Tears filled Chloe’s eyes.

That was enough.

They hugged once.

Briefly.

Then let go.
