The Collapse

Chapter 14 - The Collapse
Ryan’s architecture firm lost its largest client.
Then another.
His partners voted to suspend him while financial irregularities were investigated.
The house he had rented after leaving Elena was taken back by the owner when his payment failed.
Within three weeks, the man who once controlled every room he entered was living in a business hotel near the freeway.
Elena expected to feel victorious.
She didn’t.
Revenge was loud in imagination.
In real life, consequences were quieter.
A canceled card.
An empty office.
A phone that stopped ringing.
Ryan called her at midnight.
She almost ignored it.
Then she answered.
“I need help.”
Elena closed her eyes.
For years, those three words would have brought her running.
Not anymore.
“You need an attorney.”
“I need my wife.”
“You don’t have one.”
Ryan started crying.
Real tears, perhaps.
That was the cruelest part.
Elena still knew the difference between his breathing when he was pretending and when he was truly afraid.
She could hear fear now.
But fear was not love.
And pity was not a marriage.
“Elena, please.”
She looked through the window toward the pool.
The water was still.
“I hope you get through this, Ryan.”
He went silent.
“But you’re going to do it without using me.”
Then she ended the call.
Her hand shook afterward.

Strength, she learned, did not always feel strong.
Sometimes it felt like grief with boundaries.
