Ryan's Letter

Chapter 18 - Ryan's Letter
The divorce was finalized eleven months after the afternoon at the pool.
Ryan received no interest in the villa.
He kept what remained of his personal assets and assumed responsibility for his business debts.
Several civil matters continued.
But Elena was free.
A week later, a letter arrived.
From Ryan.
She almost threw it away.
Instead, she read it on the terrace.
He did not ask for money.
He did not ask her to come back.
For once, he did not blame anyone else.
I spent years believing I deserved every room I entered, he wrote. I thought being loved meant being protected from consequences. You protected me for so long that I forgot you were a person, not a safety net.
Elena stopped reading.
The old version of herself would have seen hope in those words.
The new Elena saw something else.
Accountability.
Late.
Incomplete.
But real.
At the bottom, Ryan wrote:
I am sorry for what I did to you. I am also sorry that your mother understood me before I understood myself.
Elena folded the letter.
She did not answer.
