Elena remembered her mother’s final week.
Margaret had been weak but alert.
One evening, she asked Elena to sit beside her bed.
“There are some people,” Margaret had whispered, “who love the life you give them more than they love you.”
Elena had assumed she was talking about business.
Now she was no longer sure.
Daniel searched Margaret’s archived files.
Three hours later, he found a note attached to the trust amendment.
It was short.
Protect Elena from any pressured transfer involving Ryan Hart.
Elena read the sentence twice.
Ryan walked into the study.
“You’re turning your mother against me after she’s dead.”
Elena looked at him.
“She wrote this before she died.”
Ryan stopped.
Daniel closed the laptop.
“I think you should leave.”
Ryan laughed.
“This is my marriage.”
Elena stood.
“No. This is my house.”
Ryan’s face hardened.
There it was again.
The man beneath the charm.
“You think you can erase fourteen years because of one mistake?”
Elena looked toward the pool.
“One mistake?”
Ryan glanced away.
She followed his eyes.
And suddenly she knew.
“Chloe wasn’t the first.”
Ryan’s silence filled the room.
Elena felt something inside her break.
But what surprised her was what came after.
