The Debt Behind the Smile

Chapter 09 - The Debt Behind the Smile
Ryan owed more than two million dollars.
Not to one bank.
To three private lenders.
He had borrowed against future contracts that never materialized.
He had guaranteed development projects that failed.
And he had hidden every loss from Elena.
The villa had become his escape plan.
Sell it for four million.
Pay the lenders.
Pocket the secret fee.
Tell Elena the market had forced a bad price.
Start over.
Elena sat across from him at the dining table where her mother once hosted Thanksgiving.
“Were you ever going to tell me?”
Ryan looked exhausted.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No. You were protecting yourself.”
“I was ashamed.”
“You were sleeping with Chloe.”
“That happened because everything was falling apart.”
Elena almost admired the creativity of the excuse.
Ryan reached across the table.
“Elena, I love you.”
She pulled her hand away.
“You loved being forgiven.”
He flinched.
For years, Elena had mistaken Ryan’s apologies for vulnerability.
Now she saw the pattern.
Every apology had arrived only after discovery.
Never before.
Ryan looked toward the hallway.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
Elena stared at him.
Fourteen years of marriage.
A thousand shared mornings.
Holidays.
Funerals.
Promises.
And somehow, the question that finally ended them was about where he would sleep.
“Anywhere but here.”
Ryan stood slowly.
At the front door, he turned.
“You’re going to regret making me your enemy.”
May you like
Elena felt a chill.
Because for the first time, Ryan was no longer pretending to be her husband.
