The Room Her Mother Locked

Chapter 15 - The Room Her Mother Locked
While preparing documents for the divorce, Elena opened a storage room in the villa.
Her mother had kept it locked for years.
Inside were boxes of photographs, letters, and old family records.
At the bottom of one box, Elena found a journal.
Margaret had written about Ryan.
At first, she liked him.
Then she noticed small things.
How he asked about Elena’s inheritance.
How he encouraged Elena to sell investments.
How he became irritated when Margaret refused to add him to the villa trust.
One entry was dated three years earlier.
Ryan asked me what happens to the villa if Elena dies before him.
Elena stopped reading.
The sentence chilled her.
Not because she believed Ryan had wanted her dead.
But because she finally understood how long he had viewed her life through the lens of ownership.
At the end of the journal, Margaret wrote:
I cannot choose Elena’s husband. I can only make sure she still has somewhere to stand if he turns out to be the wrong man.
Elena pressed the journal to her chest.
For months after her mother’s death, she had felt abandoned.
Now, sitting in the dusty room, she realized Margaret had left her more than property.
She had left protection.

And, somehow, permission.
Permission to walk away.
