THE RECEIPT IN MY MOTHER'S JEWELRY BOX

Chapter 01 - THE RECEIPT IN MY MOTHER'S JEWELRY BOX

## chapter 01 - The Accusation

Emma Carter had barely set her suitcase beside the sofa when her father began shouting.

“Tell me where it is.”

Robert Carter stood between Emma and the front door, his face red with anger. At fifty-eight, he was still an imposing man, the kind who could silence a room simply by lowering his voice. Today, however, there was nothing controlled about him.

Emma stared at him. “Where is what?”

“Your mother’s necklace.”

The words hit harder than the accusation.

Margaret Carter had been dead for eighteen months. The sapphire necklace Robert was talking about had belonged to her grandmother, then her mother, and Margaret had promised it would one day belong to Emma.

“I haven’t touched it.”

Robert pointed toward the small wooden jewelry box on the coffee table.

“It’s gone.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears. “Dad, I just got home.”

“You knew where I kept the key.”

For a few seconds, Emma could not speak.

She had come home because her younger brother, Ethan, had called and said their father was falling apart. She expected grief, unpaid bills, maybe an uncomfortable family conversation.

She had not expected to be accused of stealing from her dead mother.

Robert grabbed the jewelry box, opened the hidden compartment beneath the velvet tray, and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

A pawn shop receipt.

He stared at it.

Then his expression changed.

Because the name written on the receipt was not Emma Carter.

It was Robert Carter.
