The Message Margaret Recorded

Chapter 12 - The Message Margaret Recorded

While cleaning the office, Ethan found an old phone.

It had belonged to Margaret.

The battery barely worked.

Inside were photographs, unfinished notes, and one saved voice recording.

The date was twelve days before she died.

Emma, Ethan, and Robert sat together to listen.

Margaret’s voice was weak.

But unmistakably hers.

She spoke about ordinary things.

The roses.

A casserole Caroline from church had brought.

The way Robert snored.

Then she said:

“If you are all listening to this together, I hope that means someone finally became brave enough to tell the truth.”

Robert laughed through tears.

Margaret continued.

“Robert, stop trying to save everyone alone.”

“Ethan, you are allowed to build your own life.”

“Emma, being strong does not mean leaving before someone can disappoint you.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Her mother had known them too well.

The final sentence changed everything.

“Home was never the house. It was always the place where we told each other the truth and stayed anyway.”
