The Woman Who Bought the Necklace

Chapter 04 - The Woman Who Bought the Necklace
Her name was Caroline Wells.
She lived forty minutes away.
Emma expected a wealthy collector.
Instead, Caroline was a retired elementary school teacher who had purchased the necklace from a vintage jewelry dealer.
She invited Emma and Ethan into a modest house filled with books, framed photographs, and handmade quilts.
When Emma explained why they had come, Caroline touched the sapphire pendant at her throat.
“I wondered if someone would eventually find me.”
Emma looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Not everything.”
Caroline went to a desk and returned with an envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Margaret.
Emma nearly dropped it.
Her mother was standing outside the same pawn shop, smiling weakly.
Robert was beside her.
Emma whispered, “He said she didn’t know.”
Caroline shook her head.
“Your mother knew.”
The revelation left Emma speechless.
Caroline explained that Margaret had contacted the shop shortly before her death. She had learned the necklace had been sold and asked the shop to pass along a letter if the buyer was ever located.
Caroline had received that letter months later.
She handed it to Emma.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My dear Emma,
If this necklace ever finds its way back to you, please do not let it become the reason you hate your father.
Emma stopped reading.
