The morning before Emma’s flight, the sapphire necklace disappeared.
For one terrible second, old instincts returned.
Emma looked at Robert.
Robert looked at Ethan.
Then everyone stopped.
No accusations.
No shouting.
No assumptions.
Robert actually laughed.
“Well,” he said, “we’ve been here before.”
They searched the house together.
Twenty minutes later, Caroline arrived.
She was wearing the necklace.
Emma stared at her.
Caroline smiled.
“You gave it to me last night.”
Emma remembered.
After dinner, she had asked Caroline to take it to a jeweler to repair the clasp.
She had been so exhausted she forgot.
Everyone burst out laughing.
The moment was absurd.
But it mattered.
Months earlier, a missing necklace had torn open years of secrets.
