Ethan’s Confession

Chapter 07 - Ethan’s Confession
Ethan found Emma the next morning.
He sat across from her in the hotel café and admitted something he had hidden from everyone.
He had dropped out of graduate school six months earlier.
Emma stared at him.
“You told me you were taking a semester off.”
“I lied.”
The word hung between them.
Ethan had been working nights and sending money to Robert.
He had convinced himself he was protecting their father.
Instead, he had become part of the same pattern.
Emma leaned back.
“Mom died, and all three of us started lying to each other.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“I didn’t know how to fix him.”
“It wasn’t your job.”
“He’s our dad.”
“And you’re his son. Not his rescue plan.”
Ethan began to cry.
Emma reached across the table and took his hand.
For the first time, she realized her brother had been carrying the family’s fear alone.
She was still angry.
But anger made room for compassion.
Then Ethan told her something else.
Robert had received an offer to sell the family house.
The closing was scheduled for Friday.
Emma looked at him sharply.
“Does he want to sell?”
Ethan shook his head.
“He thinks he has no choice.”
Emma stood.

She was going home.
