What He Sold

Chapter 03 - What He Sold
Robert finally sat down.
He told them the business had begun failing two years earlier.
He had hidden it from Margaret.
He had hidden it from everyone.
Then medical bills arrived.
Not all of Margaret’s treatments were covered. Robert borrowed money, maxed out credit cards, and refinanced equipment from his construction company.
When that was not enough, he pawned the sapphire necklace.
“I was going to buy it back,” he said.
Emma could barely breathe.
“Mom knew?”
Robert looked away.
“No.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“That’s not the whole story.”
Robert stood.
“I said enough.”
Ethan did not move.
“The pawn ticket expired.”
Emma looked at her brother.
“What does that mean?”
“It means the necklace was sold.”
Robert closed his eyes.
Emma felt something break inside her.
The necklace itself was not what hurt most.
It was the image of her mother spending her final months believing a family heirloom was safe while her husband secretly sold it.
“You accused me,” Emma said.
Robert tried to answer.
“You screamed in my face because you thought I stole something you had already lost.”
“I panicked.”
“No,” Emma replied. “You needed someone else to blame.”
Robert’s shoulders dropped.
But Ethan was not finished.
“There’s another reason he panicked.”
Emma turned.
Ethan reached into his jacket and placed a second paper on the table.
It was a letter from the pawn shop.
