Margaret’s Last Secret
Chapter 05 - Margaret’s Last Secret
Emma read the letter twice.
Margaret had discovered Robert’s financial problems weeks before her death.
She also discovered that he had pawned the necklace to help pay for an experimental treatment she had wanted to try.
She had been angry.
But not because he sold the jewelry.
She was angry because he had lied.
Margaret wrote that Robert had spent his life believing a husband’s job was to protect his family from fear, even if protection required deception.
He had never learned that love could survive bad news.
So he hid everything.
Emma lowered the letter.
Ethan’s face was pale.
Caroline quietly left the room.
Margaret’s final paragraph was the hardest.
Your father will carry guilt long after I am gone. Do not carry it for him. But do not let his worst decision erase every good thing he gave us.
Emma thought about the man screaming at her that morning.
She was not ready to forgive him.
But now she understood something.
Robert had not pawned the necklace because he stopped loving Margaret.
He had pawned it because he was terrified of losing her.
Then he lost her anyway.
When Emma and Ethan returned home, Robert was sitting alone in the dark.
Emma placed Margaret’s letter in front of him.

He stared at the handwriting.
Then he began to cry.
